CRANBERRY helps fight cystitis |

| Cystitis
is a urinary tract infection affecting the bladder and
urethra which is caused in 90% of cases by the E.Coli
bacteria and which affects one in every 5 people, usually
women. |

Although
cystitis can occur throughout the year, it is more frequent
in summer as the vaginal area is in more constant contact with
damp swimming costumes and chlorine.
The Spanish Association of Phyto-therapeutic Gynaecology (SEGIF)
together with the Spanish Association of Gynaecology and Obstetrics
recommend the use of cranberry or blueberry, especially in recurring
cases of cystitis.

The reason for its bactericide properties is unknown, although
it is thought that it may inhibit the bacteria
adhering to the gastric mucosa making the fruit juice especially
effective in fi ghting the infection. Cranberry
stops bacteria sticking to the epithelium thus avoiding infection.
It is also said that the fructose found in the juice may play
a relevant role in this bactericidal function. Proanthocyanides
and tannins are the main active ingredients working in the urinary
tract.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the Proanthocyanides
found in Cranberry can stop the bacteria Helicobacter pylori
adhering to the epithelial cells in the stomach. This bacterium
is responsible for most gastric and duodenal ulcers.
A double blind test (neither patient nor doctor know who is
taking the medicine and who the placebo) recently carried out,
showed that taking 300Mª of commercially produced juice
resulted in a signifi cant diminishing of bacterial contamination
in the urine of a elderly lady after 4-8 weeks of treatment.
This period may coincide with an initial action on intestinal
bacterial flora.
Cranberry is currently being studied for use in fi ghting arteriosclerosis
because of its fl avonoid content. It is also being researched
as an anti-aging agent because of its high antioxidant content.
